Help us bring Alebrijes to Burning Man!

Larger than life-size Alebrijes - Mexican folk figures of mythical animals on the playa at Burning Man.

San Francisco-based artist Laura Salcido will bring three chimeric alebrijes to the Burning Man arts festival through bold sculptures: a 10-foot-tall winged horse, a six-foot-tall howling coyote, and a five-foot-diameter turtle, all painted in beautiful colors.

Visitors to the pieces will be invited to interact with the stories the creatures tell. When they draw near, they’ll be able to spot symbols and icons that represent Burner culture and community, from fairy shrimp, bikes, and bacon to Larry Harvey’s hat and logos representing international and regional Burns. To see those, however, they’ll have to be ready to change their perspective on the piece by moving in close. Multi-colored benches will surround the perimeter of the pieces, offering a place for Burners to observe the alebrijes and the humans interacting with them.

These three alebrijes will celebrate the artist’s heritage and the experiences of the broader Burner community, while providing a dash of interactive whimsy for all who approach the figures. Help us bring these alebrijes to the playa! We have been offered a partial Burning Man Art Honorarium for 2023, but must cover the majority of the costs.
